Steps to vote- For your information

Knock, Knock! You there?

Remember that we knocked your door to remind you of your franchise, your power and privilege to vote. It’s been some days indeed and we believe you would have surely woken up! But folks, to wake up is one thing, and to act is another!
So this time, we have checked-in to brief you up with some short & crisp steps to follow, once you have decided to cast a vote.

Check out whether you are aware:

  • First and foremost, you should be 18 years of age as on 1st Jan of the year for which the electoral roll is prepared, besides, you should be a white-listed citizen with a sound mind, which we are sure you would be!
  • You would be wondering what this electoral roll is! It’s just a listing of voters registered area-wise (polling-booth location wise) for every constituency. Please note that your name should appear in this electoral roll . This is a prime pre-requisite for being able to vote!
  • You can confirm about your enrollment from the Electoral Registration Officer of your area and can also view the electoral roll of major cities on official websites.
  • If you are already issued with a voter ID card (Electors Photo Identity Card), it is mandatory for you to carry it on the day of voting. However, if it has not yet been issued, you can carry any other approved identity proof document instead. So, if you don’t have one right now, no need to rush for it! You can anytime apply for it post elections!
  • If at all, you wonder that the polling station would be ‘too crowded’ on the day of voting, then let us inform you that every polling booth can have maximum 1200 electors . What better assurance do you need for not standing in long queues?!
  • What’s even more convenient is that you won’t have to travel any long distance to reach the polling station because these polling booths are so set up that no voter will have to cover more than 2 kms

So gear up and bring the momentum!

    Dear Abhishek,

As you said that your name is not there in the voter list of your polling booth (or constituency), there could be possibly the following reasons why it is not so:

    (1) You never applied for voter registration in the past, which is a necessary condition for being able to vote.
    (2) You did apply for voter registration, but for a different constituency or a different address(within the same constituency); and later you changed your address (or your constituency)
    (3) You have recently applied for voter registration, which in some cases, might take time for the applicant’s name to be registered in the voter’s list.

If the first is true, then you can apply for voter registration by filling Form 6 and submitting it at the office of your local Electoral Registration Officer.

If the second is true, then you can apply for address modification by filling Form 8A, which would transfer your entry to the voter list of another booth location within the same constituency. However, if you got relocated and now reside in a different constituency, then you should get your name deleted from the electoral roll of the previous constituency by filling Form 7 and again apply for voter registration by submitting Form 6 to the Electoral Registration Officer of the new/latest constituency while mentioning your new address.

If the last is true, then you should not worry as you have done you job. However, you can find the latest voter list for your polling booth at the office of your local Electoral Registration Officer, else you can check it online at the website of the Chief Electoral Officer. If still you dont find it updated, then you can always approch the local Elecotoral Office with the receipt of your voter registration application.
